What is a mid-length foil board?

Advantages and Key Takeaways of Mid-Length Foil Board

Defining “Mid-Length”

The term mid-length originated in surfing, referring to a board length that falls between a shortboard and a longboard. For wing foiling, mid-length boards typically range from 5’10” to 6’5” with a relatively narrow beam of 18” to 22”.

Advantages of a Mid-Length Wing Board

The mid-length board offers a unique blend of performance, glide, and versatility, making it an excellent choice for many freeriders and downwind wing foilers. Some key benefits include:

  •  Glide at Takeoff
The longer shape allows for an easier launch, requiring less effort to get on foil.
  •  Touch-and-Go Capability
When touching down, the board recovers quickly, making for smoother sessions.
  •  Works Well with Smaller Foils
Can efficiently carry smaller foils, the length to width ratio drastically eases the take-off phase.
  •  Narrow Width for Carving & Upwind Performance
A streamlined shape improves maneuverability and efficiency.
  •  Handles Shore Break Well
Its length allows it to pierce through waves with ease.
  •  Great for Light Wind & When the Wind Drops
Allows riders to return to shore effortlessly.

Potential Downsides

While the mid-length board offers many benefits, it’s important to consider a few trade-offs:

    •  Not Suited for Jumps
The longer length and shape are not designed for aerial tricks.
 Can Feel Unstable at Start
The narrower width may be less stable when first getting started.
Mid-length wing boards are also typically ridden strapless, further emphasizing their freeride and downwind capabilities.

Development of Mid-Length Wing Boards

In 2023, Voga Marine introduced some of the first mid-length wing boards, inspired by downwind (DW) boards. At the time, their unusual length, bulbous front, and narrower width were uncommon in the wing foiling world, yet they proved to be surprisingly stable and incredibly fun to ride.

Some early models included:

  •  6’5” x 19” x 90L
  •  6’5” x 21” x 90L

Who is the Mid-Length Wing Board For?

  •  Freeriders looking for a one-board quiver that works in multiple conditions.
  •  Downwind wing foilers who need a board that glides efficiently and performs well in mixed conditions.

Ideal Riding Conditions

Thanks to their versatility, mid-length wing boards perform well in various conditions, including:

  •  Flat water & waves – Great for lakes, rivers, and open ocean sessions.
  •  Wide wind range – From light wind cruising to moderate wind foiling.

Our Mid-Length Boards: Refined Since 2023

At Voga Marine, we have perfected our mid-length wing board designs since their introduction. Our latest models feature:

  •  Bulbous Nose & Slight Concave – Ensures effortless touch-and-go for smooth landings.
  •  Countersunk Deck – Lowers the center of gravity for increased stability.
  •  Round Pintail – Enhances carving and smooth transitions.
  •  Concave Bevels on the Aft – Adds initial stability for an easier start.
  •  Reduced Wet Surface– Enables a faster takeoff and better glide.
  •   Honeycomb Build, IPN Internal Structure, Carbon Foil Tracks Vogabox© – Maximizes stiffness for precision handling.
The result? A balanced, highly responsive board that feels like an extension of the rider—so natural that you’ll forget you’re even on a mid-length board.

Current Developments : Surf Foil & Low-Kite Mid-Length Boards

We're expanding our mid-length foil board lineup with two exciting new models:

  •  Versatile Mid-Length Surf Foil Board
Designed for both surf foiling and wing foiling, this model will be slightly shorter and thinner than our current lineup, offering enhanced maneuverability and responsiveness.
  •  Parawing Low-Kite Special
Optimized for low-kite riding, this board will feature a slightly wider shape for better stability during takeoff, a rounder nose to facilitate bearing away, and a shorter overall length to minimize tangling.
  •  Prone Parawing Downwind
Derived from our mid-length surf foil model, this board is optimized for downwind riding, allowing you to start with hand paddles or a parawing. It features increased volume and width for enhanced stability during takeoff, enabling downwind sessions without the need for a paddle.
Stay tuned for more innovations!
